Golf balls

Tour balls have a urethane cover for spin and feel around the green. Soft and distance balls have a firmer cover, spin less off the driver and cost less.

Gloves

Leather for feel, synthetic for wet weather and a longer life. Most golfers keep one of each in the bag.

  • FootJoySynthetic / all-weather

    WeatherSof

Best for golfers who want an everyday glove at a fair price

FootJoy's most popular glove and the one most golfers end up with. Synthetic where the glove takes wear, leather on the palm patch and thumb where you want feel. Lasts longer than an all-leather glove and costs less.

    StaSof

Best for golfers who want a premium leather feel

FootJoy's top-of-the-line cabretta leather glove, the one its tour staff wear most. Thin, soft and tacky in the hand. Keep it dry; it is a feel glove, not a wet-weather glove.

    Players

Grips

Worn grips make you hold the club tighter and cost you the club face. A set is 13 grips; regripping is an afternoon's job or a small fee at any golf shop.

    MCC Plus4

  • Golf PrideRubber

    Tour Velvet

Best for golfers who want the standard grip most clubs ship with

The grip most new clubs ship with, and the benchmark for feel. Plain rubber with a fine plus-sign pattern for traction and moderate feedback. Choose it when you want the regrip to feel exactly like the day the clubs were new.

  • Golf PrideRubber

    CP2 Pro

Best for golfers who want a soft feel or have sore hands

Golf Pride's softest and tackiest grip, with the built-up lower hand from the Plus4. Less shock through the hands on mishits. A favourite of golfers with arthritis or anyone who grips too tight.

Tees

Wood is the traditional choice and breaks. Plastic lasts a season. Colour-coded lengths help you tee the ball the same height every time.

All tees on Amazon.ca
  • PrideWood

    Professional Tee System, wood

Best for golfers who want every club teed at the same height

The wood tee most tour players use. Each length has its own colour stripe, so a driver tee always sits at the same height in the ground. Buy the big bag; wood tees break.

View on Amazon.ca Sponsored · price and reviews on Amazon
  • PridePlastic

    Professional Tee System, plastic (Evolution)

Best for golfers who want the wood-tee look that lasts all season

The plastic version of the PTS tee: same lengths and colour codes, far more durable. A pack lasts far longer than a bag of wood tees.

View on Amazon.ca Sponsored · price and reviews on Amazon
  • ChampPlastic

    Zarma FLYtee

Best for golfers who want a durable tee at a consistent height

A six-prong plastic tee that holds the ball with less contact than a wooden cup. Stripes let you push it to the same height every time. Champ says it lasts about five times longer than wood.

View on Amazon.ca Sponsored · price and reviews on Amazon
  • Zero FrictionPlastic

    Victory 5-Prong

Best for golfers who want less tee touching the ball

Zero Friction's five-prong tee, the design the brand built its name on. Less tee in contact with the ball at impact, and the plastic rarely breaks. Sold in a 40-pack.

GPS watches and rangefinders.

A GPS watch gives front, middle and back distances on every hole without pointing at anything. A laser rangefinder gives the exact distance to the flag or any target you aim at. Many golfers carry both; if you buy one, a rangefinder is the more precise tool and a watch is the more convenient one.

GPS watches

Distances on the wrist, with or without smartwatch extras.

Laser rangefinders

Every model here has a slope feature that switches off for competition.

Push carts and electric carts.

A push cart takes the bag off your back for the whole round. Three-wheel carts fold small and are the standard; an electric cart drives itself and the remote-control models follow you up the fairway. Check the folded size against your trunk before buying.

Push carts

Fold-flat three-wheelers from the brands golfers actually use.

Electric carts

Battery-powered, remote-controlled. Heavy to lift into a car, easy on the course.

Training aids.

The aids that coaches keep recommending: a tempo trainer for the driving range, a putting mirror and a pressure trainer for the living room, alignment sticks for every session. None of them replaces a lesson; all of them make practice more useful.

Swing and speed

Tempo, connection, low point and club speed.

Putting

Set-up, start line and pressure.
